Scuba Diving Holidays In Dominica
This fantastically exotic volcanic landscape boasts some truly unique diving experiences.
No shivers here if you brave the hot currents!
Country Description
The volcanic island of Dominica, with its high, forest
covered Rocky Mountains, waterfalls, hot water springs
and sulphur vents lies at the northern end of the Lesser
Antilles, between Guadeloupe and Martinique. The island's
good road system makes the sites, like the Emerald Pool
in the Trios Piton National Park relatively easy to access.
Although the more adventurous might want to take the six
hour round trip to Boiling Lake. One of only two in the
world. Whale watching trips in the winter months are huge
tourist attractions as the large population of sperm whales
only lives a few miles off shore.
Diving Description
Like the surface geography, Dominica's underwater seascape is varied. On the one hand there are gushing hot springs around the prehistoric volcano of Soufriere, and on the other you find lush marine life (huge barrel sponges, tropical reef fish), gullies and pinnacles. The majority of the diving happens of the Leeward side of the island. Although there are many areas that are undiscovered.
Soufriere
A prehistoric volcano found Soufriere Bay, this site not
only features hot water springs but also the very interesting
sites of Scott's Head Pinnacle, Soufriere Pinnacle
and Point Guignard.
La Bim Wall
A 1.5 mile long wall off the southern coast.
Champagne
A shallow hot water spring site where hot freshwater bubbles
up through black volcanic sand.
Other info
The rains swells the rivers, which subsequently affect visibility in the sea
around Dominica, however at other times you, can see perfectly. Bad fishing practices
have also seen the stocks of larger fish depleted. The dive industry is very
well developed with a number of efficient operators doing business here.
