Scuba Diving Holidays In Italy

In Italy you can enjoy wonderful food and culture as well as some great diving around almost the entire coast. Head to Sardinia for the best in cave diving.

Country Description

A beautiful country that has everything; an ancient culture, great food, wine and a population with a taste of the finer things in life. The country can be split in two; the rural south with its olive groves and vineyards, and the industrial north. The islands of Sicily, Sardinia and Capri lay off the Italian mainland.

Sardinia is perhaps best for diving. It is a mountainous island with high hills, granite rock, fertile valleys and unspoilt coastlines. The island boasts numerous caves, rivers, lakes and wetlands.

Diving Description

There is good diving almost everywhere off the coast of Italy. Much of the northern stretch of the Mediterranean is full of life with some curious features. For example, In the summer the warmer surface waters can support moray eels, but below the thermocline the temperature drops to 15 degrees C so congar eels can be found here. Finding two species of eel in one site is extremely unusual.

There is also an abundance of red fan corals below about 25m, while the rocky topography of the Mediterranean offers a perfect base for invertebrate life and a profusion of fish. However the Italian love of spearfishing has led to depletion in the numbers of larger fish.

Sardinia

Although the Mediterranean north coast is good, the best diving can be found in Sardinia. Here you can find reefs, wrecks, drop-offs and 40m-meter visibility.

Gulf of Arzachaena

Situated around an Italian national marine park, this gulf leads to a chain of sixteen islands between Sardinia and Corsica, where spectacular diving can be enjoyed.

Other info

The Italian Federation of Divers controls scuba diving here but the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) is now starting to create an infrastructure of dive centres open to all
