Scuba Diving Holidays In Tanzania
If you've an appetite for adventure don't miss out on Tanzania, where the wild waters are home to spectacular aquatic life.
Country Description
Tanzania is renowned for its vast national parks and excellent
wildlife reserves. However it also boasts some spectacular
dive sites. The best known of these are the established dive centres of Zanzibar,
a well-established tourist spot,
and Pemba, which borders Kenya and only recently opened
up to tourism. As a result the latter is something of a
trip back in time.
Diving Description
Diving in Tanzania differs from region to region. However,
some of the most spectacular sites are on the east of
the gulf between Zanzibar and Pemba. Here the rough waters
and strong currents have resulted in the area becoming
renowned for sightings of manta rays, whitesharks, hammerheads
and an abundance of pelagic life.
West of Pemba features a number of walls and drop-offs.
There is also an unusual amount of unusual marine life,
like pipefish.
Dive Sites
Mafia Marine Park
A cluster of islands south of Zanzibar, which promise excellent
locations for diving, holidays. The main island of Mafia
has a hotel that offers diving trips within the marine
park. Not many divers use visit these sites yet, even
though they are sheltered, relatively shallow and teaming
with life.
You can also dive in the unsheltered Indian Ocean side
of Mafia which promises classic reef formation, walls,
pinnacles and coral gardens, However, diving here is more
difficult due to the swells, even when the waters are calm,
and the abundance of tiger sharks.
This area is limited by tides, as boats can't reach
the shore at low tide. But it's worth it when you
do dive, just for the fantastic array of marine life.
Dar es Salaam
This region promises good diving with its low lying reefs
modest wrecks and variety of marine life.
Other info
To dive the gulf between Zanzibar and Pemba it is best
to hire a live board. However, day boats can sometimes
be arranged. The west of Pemba can be easily accessed
by day boat. However, it is important to check the tides,
as the reefs are a long way of shore and the inner lagoons
very shallow. You should note that the currents on the
East Coast are extremely strong, but the abundance of
small islands means it is possible to find sheltered
seas.
