Scuba Diving Holidays In California
Fluctuations of temperature along the California coast offer a wealth of marine life, and the kelp
forests for which the region is renowned in diving circles. Visit San Francisco for some excellent
diving facilities and stockists.
Country Description
California may be best known for its cities, but it is
also popular with dive tourists due to its kelp forests
and blue water shark dives. Good dive sites can be found
all along the coast.
Diving Description
California experiences a warm offshore wind called the
Santa Anna. This wind blows the ocean flat with the upwelling
currents bringing up huge quantities of sea life. The coast
has south and west-facing beaches meaning the divers can
access great dive sites regardless of the weather. The
mixture of currents all along the coast has created a hugely
diverse ecosystem with water temperatures ranging between
15 and 20 degrees centigrade. These fluctuations in temperature
result in diverse diving conditions, often on the same
dive. The region boasts giant kelp forests, sealions, great
white sharks and blue sharks
Dive Sites
Monterey Bay
Two hours south of San Francisco has some good dive shops
and excellent cool-water diving. Morro Bay is an excellent
site with much of the diving centred around Morro Rock,
a large outcrop with impressive reef systems and a kelp
forests.
California Channel Islands.
A group of islands of differing sizes, that stretches down
from the central coast to the north of San Diego. Many
of the islands are a part of the Channel Islands National
Park, so the area is protected by strict rules. |
