Scuba Diving Holidays In Costa Rica
The Pacific Coast of Costa Rica is a wonderful diving location, with a profusion of shark life for the hardier diver!
Country Description
A beautiful country awash with rainforests, clean cities,
towns and villages and nutrient rich waters, Costa Rica
is considered to be one of the eco tourist capitals of
the world. Geographically the country is divided by a mountain
range with the Caribbean Sea to the east, and the Pacific
Ocean to the west.
Diving Description
The Pacific side of Costa Rica offered a fantastic dive
experience. Fish life is in abundance, with whalesharks,
mantas, pilot whales and several species of sharks everywhere.
There isn't much coral but continually high number
of sharks all around you will grab your attention!
The Caribbean cost is not of much interest for divers as
an earthquake lifted all of the coral reefs out of the
water, and they died.
Dive Sites
The Guanacaste Region
The Guanacaste Region in the north west is the main centre
for diving in Pacific Costa Rica From here the near shore
reefs are easily accessed while the offshore Bat Islands
and the Catalinas (among others) are only 20 minutes
away.
The Osa Peninsular
The Osa Peninsular in the southern reaches of Costa Rica
is difficult to get to, making it a less popular destination.
But it does boast a dive centre From here you can experience
huge numbers of bull sharks and white-yips which swarm
over the volcanic region.
Cocos Islands
250 miles out from Puntarenus and classified as a National
Park; the Cocos Islands were the inspiration for the Jurassic
Park movie. Although it is hard going getting there, with
only a handful of liveaboards going to the islands which
are subject to extremely bad weather the diving here is
special - simply because this is one of the few places
on Earth where Hammerhead sharks gather.
Other info
The worst rain in Costa Rica comes between September and
early November, although even in the dry season it tends
to rain a bit. |
