Scuba Diving Holidays In Cuba
Atlantic and Caribbean meet in Cuba, a fascinating country; not least for it's diving facilities which
are improving year on year, and offer some of the best wreck diving to be had in the Americas.
Country Description
The largest of the Caribbean Greater Antilles, Cuba probably
best know for Fidel Castro, Communism, cigars an the infamous
bay of Pigs incident. However, thanks to efforts of the
Cuban authorities tourism a growth industry with dive spots
off the Isla de la Juventud promising numerous wrecks.
Diving Description
Thanks to the Islands position of being surrounded by the
Atlantic to the north and the Caribbean to the south, you
will find a wide variety of dives to suit all levels of
ability in Cuba. . The waters are warm and clear, and are
teaming with marine life. The island's entire shoreline
promises canyons, caves reefs, wells and wrecks. Most spots
can be reached from shore, while some can be accessed via
a short boat ride.
Dive Sites
Isla de la Juventud
Isla de la Juventud or the Isle of Youth is the most popular
dive destination in Cuba. It lies off the Southwest coast.
Dives here are renowned for their pristine coral and
large numbers of reef fish.
El Cristobal Colon
Off the southeast coast of Cuba you can dive the wreck
of El Cristobal Colon, a 6,800-tonne armoured cruiser that
was attacked and sunk during the 1898 Spanish-American
war. The shallowest part of the wreck lies at 12m, while
the deepest can be found at 30m. The wreck is covered in
worms, sponges and hydroids, while fish are plentiful.
Varadero
Lying 180km easy of Havana, Varadero promises many wrecks
and coral reefs. In 1990 four boats and an aeroplane were
sunk in a circle at a depth of 15-30m. They are starting
to be colonised and promise to become a first class dive
site in a few years.
Other info
You will need a tourist card as well as a valid passport
to gain entry into Cuba. Getting out costs as well. Departure
tax of US £20 is payable before you leave. |
