There are two golden rules in scuba diving. One is to make sure you have proper training. (see our Training section) The other is to make sure you have proper equipment. In scuba diving your equipment is your lifeline. Although scuba can be a very safe and enjoyable sport it is essential that you are properly kitted out, and prepared for all eventualities. The underwater environment can be dangerous and must be treated with respect. Here at scubadex we are committed to bringing you up to date information on what you'll need and where to get it.
In scuba diving, unlike snorkeling, we must take all the air we need for a dive below the surface with us. This allows a longer, deeper dive than those enjoyed by a snorkeler, who is dependent on the short pipe of his snorkel for his air supply. Breathing equipment consists of a BCD, which is an expandable bladder which help you achieve neutral bouyancy underwater, a mask to create an air space between your eyes and the water to allow you to see, a rebreather which reuses part of each breath, a regulator which connects to the tank to provide your air and a compressor which compresses air in order for more of it to be taken underwater in your tank.
It's essential for a scuba diver to wear a good wetsuit, which provides protection for the skin, and body temperature regulation. Fins, worn on the feet, give propulsion to the diver, and can be worn with or without boots. |
