Country Description
Tanzania is renowned for its vast national parks and excellent wildlife reserves. However it also boasts some spectacular dive sites. The best known of these are the established dive centres of Zanzibar, a well-established tourist spot, and Pemba, which borders Kenya and only recently opened up to tourism. As a result the latter is something of a trip back in time.

Diving Description
Diving in Tanzania differs from region to region. However, some of the most spectacular sites are on the east of the gulf between Zanzibar and Pemba. Here the rough waters and strong currents have resulted in the area becoming renowned for sightings of manta rays, whitesharks, hammerheads and an abundance of pelagic life.
West of Pemba features a number of walls and drop-offs. There is also an unusual amount of unusual marine life, like pipefish.

Mafia Marine Park
A cluster of islands south of Zanzibar, which promise excellent locations for diving, holidays. The main island of Mafia has a hotel that offers diving trips within the marine park. Not many divers use visit these sites yet, even though they are sheltered, relatively shallow and teaming with life.
You can also dive in the unsheltered Indian Ocean side of Mafia which promises classic reef formation, walls, pinnacles and coral gardens, However, diving here is more difficult due to the swells, even when the waters are calm, and the abundance of tiger sharks.
This area is limited by tides, as boats can't reach the shore at low tide. But it's worth it when you do dive, just for the fantastic array of marine life.
Dar es Salaam
This region promises good diving with its low lying reefs modest wrecks and variety of marine life.

To dive the gulf between Zanzibar and Pemba it is best to hire a live board. However, day boats can sometimes be arranged. The west of Pemba can be easily accessed by day boat. However, it is important to check the tides, as the reefs are a long way of shore and the inner lagoons very shallow. You should note that the currents on the East Coast are extremely strong, but the abundance of small islands means it is possible to find sheltered seas.
